Breakfast at Caravan

Choice eateries are two-a-penny around Islington, but when it comes to that all-important first meal of the day, it really pays to breakfast like a king. Here’s our round up of the best places to grab brekkie in and around N1…

Ottolenghi on Upper Street is something of an Islington institution. It might be an oldie but it’s still a goodie with its consistently fresh and tasty slant on the bakery breakfast. Specialties include the cinnamon French toast (to die for), and the Cannellini bean stew with bacon and chorizo – which is as hearty and delicious as it sounds. Grab a table near the window and while the morning away people watching. 287 Upper Street London, N1 2TZ

Wander towards Angel and you’ll stumble across The Breakfast Club on Camden Passage. It may involve a lengthy queue, but as the old adage goes, ‘good things come to those who wait’. This small but perfectly formed 80s kitsch café serves up a massive breakfast menu with everything from The Full Monty to breakfast bagels and Bircher muesli. Our tip? Go for the Huevos Rancheros – it’s delicious. 31 Camden Passage, N1 8EA

Meanwhile, on the border with Farringdon, Caravan on Exmouth Market (pictured above) is Antipodean brekkie at its best. This trendy haven is a mecca for mums and arty types alike and offers up a new world of breakfasting for Clerkenwell locals, as well as some of the best coffee this side of Costa Rica. Try the cornbread French toast with avocado and rocket, creamy mushrooms on toast seasoned with soy sauce or the coconut bread with lemon curd cheese. 1-13 Exmouth Market, London, EC1R 4QD
