Kicking off with a tribute to the changing of the guard (and a nod to London town), ‘God Save our Bareskins’ was the kind of pastiche that would have the old guard choking on their breakfast. As the title suggests, although the girls are fabulously accessorised with glossy bearskin hats and extravagantly tasseled epaulets, they are otherwise totally nude…
The rest of show is so fabulous that it’s easy to forget that the girls are naked. Produced by Harvey ‘live 8′ Goldsmith, it’s a spectacle of lights and illusion, and the legs and mirrors sequence (their version of Britney Spear’s Toxic), even managed to stun the lairy bankers in front of us into silence. Funnily enough, they were also completely still throughout satirical vignette, ‘Crisis. What Crisis?’ The prim and proper secretary performing a saucy strip tease, may have had something to do with it.
This irony is maintained throughout, and as the show ends with the girls in identical coloured wigs, lip synching: ‘I don’t care if he’s a little heavy/ As long as it’s in the wallet/After all/ Sex can’t pay the bills/ All the time’, it’s with a big playful wink to the audience, just as we’re all presented with our (astronomical) bar bills. The girls battle with the closing curtain, struggling to stay in the spotlight, poking their heads through to blow an extra kiss or two. The audience clap delightedly. They don’t want it to end! Who cares that they’re pretending? We don’t want it to end, either. We want to go again!
