Last winter Completely London launched a search for London’s next great artistic talent. We now present our winner: Penelope Koliopoulou, from E9.
Hailing from an Athens suburb, Penelope arrived in London in 2010 to study for an MA in film and fashion at the London College of Fashion, admitting, ‘I’ve always had an obsession with clothes.’ She’s been working here ever since, saying of her adopted home city, ‘You see people of different backgrounds, lifestyles, states of mind, looks, millions of trends, tribes, scenes living one next to another.’
And it is from this teeming variety that Penelope draws inspiration, with the characters who appear in her photos already existing in a mental ‘library‘. ‘When I meet or look at someone, I try to classify them in different categories that I have in mind.’ Penelope shoots herself twice for each photo as she plays both halves of an imaginary couple and then creates a series of intimate images. She uses Photoshop to create the striking end result.
We hope that having her work showcased in Completely London will be a step towards realising that ambition.
